Frequently Asked Questions

What is GST and how is it calculated?

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is an indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India. To add GST: GST Amount = (Base Amount × GST Rate) ÷ 100. Total = Base Amount + GST Amount. For example, on ₹10,000 at 18%: GST = ₹1,800, Total = ₹11,800.

What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?

For intra-state (within one state) transactions, GST is split equally into CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST). For inter-state transactions, IGST (Integrated GST) is charged at the full rate. So 18% intra-state = 9% CGST + 9% SGST. 18% inter-state = 18% IGST.

What are the GST slabs in India?

India has four main GST slabs: 5% (essential goods like edible oil, sugar, spices), 12% (processed food, computers), 18% (most goods and services, electronics, restaurants) and 28% (luxury and sin goods like cars, tobacco, aerated drinks). Some essentials are at 0% (exempt) and gold/silver at 3%.

How do I remove GST from a price that already includes GST?

Use the reverse GST formula: Base Amount = (Inclusive Price × 100) ÷ (100 + GST Rate). GST Amount = Inclusive Price − Base Amount. For example, if the total is ₹11,800 at 18% GST: Base = (11800 × 100) ÷ 118 = ₹10,000. GST = ₹1,800.

Who needs to pay GST?

Any business or individual with an annual turnover exceeding ₹20 lakhs (₹10 lakhs for special category states) is required to register for GST and collect it on taxable supplies. Exporters, e-commerce sellers, and inter-state suppliers must also register regardless of turnover.

Can I use this calculator for invoice preparation?

Yes — this calculator gives you the exact CGST, SGST and IGST amounts needed for GST-compliant invoices. Enter your base amount, choose the applicable slab, select the supply type and copy the results directly to your invoice.
