Frequently Asked Questions

What types of watermarks can I add?

You can add a text watermark (custom label such as "CONFIDENTIAL", "DRAFT", your company name or any text string) or an image watermark (your logo or signature as a PNG/JPG). Text watermarks support custom font size, colour, opacity and rotation angle. Image watermarks support opacity and position control. Both types can be placed at the centre, corners or along any margin.

Can I control the opacity of the watermark?

Yes — opacity is adjustable from 5% (nearly invisible, ideal for very subtle branding) to 100% (fully opaque). Most professional uses choose 15–30% opacity for text watermarks so the underlying document content remains clearly readable. For image watermarks like logos, 20–40% is typically ideal. Adjust the slider and preview before downloading.

Will the watermark affect the PDF file quality?

No — the original PDF page content is not re-compressed or re-rendered when adding a watermark. The watermark is added as an additional layer on top of the existing content stream. Text is rendered as crisp vector text, not a rasterised image, so quality and file size are virtually unchanged. The original fonts, images and layout remain untouched.

Can I add the watermark to specific pages only?

Yes — you can apply the watermark to all pages, odd pages only, even pages only, a specific range (e.g. pages 2–10) or individual pages. This is useful when the first page is a cover and should remain clean, or when only interior pages need marking. Enter the page selection before processing.

Is the watermark permanent or can it be removed?

The watermark is embedded into the PDF content stream, making it persistent and not removable by simply selecting and deleting in standard PDF readers. However, advanced PDF editing software can remove layers if the recipient has full editing access. For maximum security, combine the watermark with a password-protection step using our Lock PDF tool — this prevents editing entirely.

Can I watermark a password-protected PDF?

No — password-protected PDFs with editing restrictions cannot be watermarked without first unlocking them. Use our Unlock PDF tool to remove the password (you will need the document password to do this), add your watermark, and then optionally re-protect the document using our Lock PDF tool. This workflow keeps the file secure throughout.

What is the difference between a watermark and a stamp?

A watermark is a semi-transparent mark that appears behind or over all page content, typically used for branding or status marking (DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL). A stamp is typically an opaque image placed in a corner — like a "PAID" or "APPROVED" rubber stamp. Both appear visually similar; the key difference is opacity and purpose. This tool handles both use cases through the opacity slider.

Does the watermark appear when the PDF is printed?

Yes — because the watermark is embedded into the PDF content itself (not the viewer overlay), it will appear when printed exactly as shown in the preview. This is important for marking physical copies of sensitive documents. If you want a watermark only visible on screen and not when printed, that would require specialist PDF authoring software with optional content layers, which is beyond standard browser-based tools.

Can I add a diagonal watermark across the full page?

Yes — diagonal watermarks are the most common choice for documents. Set the rotation to 45° (or –45° for the opposing diagonal) and adjust the font size to span the page. For A4 pages, a font size of 60–80pt at 45° typically crosses the full page diagonally. The preview will show the result before you commit to downloading.

Is my PDF file uploaded to any server?

No — all processing happens entirely within your browser using JavaScript and the PDF-lib library. Your file is never transmitted to any server, which means your sensitive documents (contracts, financials, legal documents) remain completely private. No account is required and no file is stored, logged or retained anywhere outside your own device.
