What Is Slash Text
Slash text adds a diagonal line through every character in your text using the Unicode Combining Short Solidus Overlay (U+0337). Unlike strikethrough, which draws a horizontal line through the middle of each letter, the slash combines a diagonal stroke that cuts across each character from lower-left to upper-right, creating a visually distinct crossed-out or redacted effect.
Like all combining character text in this tool, the slash mark is part of the text itself at the encoding level. It travels with each character when you copy and paste, displaying the slash-through appearance on every platform that supports Unicode without needing any formatting support from the receiving application.
Slash vs Strikethrough: The Visual and Semantic Difference
| Style | Unicode | Direction | Communicates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strikethrough | U+0336 | Horizontal, through the middle | Deletion, correction, negation, editorial revision |
| Slash through | U+0337 | Diagonal, lower-left to upper-right | Stylistic texture, redaction aesthetic, creative emphasis |
Strikethrough carries strong editorial meaning: something has been crossed out, corrected or negated. Slash text is more stylistic than semantic. The diagonal stroke creates visual texture and an edgier, more disruptive appearance without the specific editorial connotation of strikethrough. Where strikethrough says “this was changed,” slash text says “this is different.”
Where Slash Text Is Used
- Stylistic social media posts: Slash text creates a rougher, more confrontational visual texture than standard decorated text. It suits edgy captions, punk and alternative aesthetics, and posts where the visual disruption of the slash mark reinforces the content’s tone.
- Redaction and censorship aesthetics: The slash-through appearance evokes redacted documents and censored content, which has become a visual trope in political commentary, internet culture and creative design.
- No or prohibition symbols: Slash through a single word communicates “no” or “not” visually, as in c̷o̷s̷t̷ or r̷u̷l̷e̷s̷, where the slashed word reinforces a negation in the surrounding text.
- Music and alternative culture aesthetics: Punk, metal, industrial and experimental music communities use slash text in social media posts as part of a visual language that signals rejection of mainstream aesthetics.
Platform Compatibility
Unicode slash-through combining characters render correctly on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp, Discord and TikTok. As with strikethrough and underline combining marks, the slash character is counted toward character limits on platforms with limits, such as Twitter’s 280-character count. Each slashed character counts as two codepoints (the letter plus the combining slash), but Twitter counts them as a single character for display purposes in most implementations.
