Frequently Asked Questions

What is the standard tip percentage?

In the US, 15–20% is standard for restaurants. 15% is acceptable, 18% is good, 20% is generous. For exceptional service, 25% or more is appropriate. In the UK and many European countries, tipping is less expected.

How is a tip calculated?

Tip Amount = Bill × (Tip Percentage ÷ 100). Total = Bill + Tip. For a $85 bill with 18% tip: Tip = $15.30, Total = $100.30.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Opinions vary. Most etiquette guidelines suggest tipping on the pre-tax amount, but tipping on the total (post-tax) is also common and makes the calculation simpler.

How do I split a bill with different items?

For equal splits, divide the total (including tip) by the number of people. For individual amounts, use our Split Bill Calculator and adjust each person's share manually.
