📖How to Use Time Zone Converter

  1. 1
Enter the source time and zone

Your local time zone is detected automatically. Set the source time using the time picker and choose the source time zone from the dropdown — organised by continent for easy browsing. All major IANA time zones are supported.

  2. 2
    Choose your target time zone

Select the destination time zone to convert to. Add multiple target zones using the + button to see the same moment expressed in several cities simultaneously — ideal for scheduling international calls and meetings.

  3. 3
    Read your converted times

Each target zone shows the converted time, the UTC offset (e.g. UTC+5:30), the local date (which may differ if crossing midnight), and a DST indicator if daylight saving time is currently in effect. The world clock tab shows current live times for all added zones.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does daylight saving time (DST) affect the conversion?

DST shifts clocks forward in spring and backward in autumn in many countries, changing the UTC offset by typically 1 hour. Our converter automatically detects whether DST is in effect on the entered date for both the source and target zones, applying the correct offset for that specific date — not just a fixed offset that would be wrong half the year.

What is UTC and how does it relate to time zones?

UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the universal time standard from which all other time zones are offset. UTC+0 is the same as GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). Time zones are expressed as UTC+X (ahead of UTC) or UTC-X (behind UTC). For example, New York in winter is UTC-5 (EST), and in summer UTC-4 (EDT). All conversions in this tool use UTC as the reference point.

What is the difference between GMT and UTC?

For everyday purposes, GMT and UTC are the same — both represent time at 0° longitude with no offset. The technical difference is that UTC is based on atomic clocks and is the scientific standard, while GMT is based on mean solar time at the Greenwich meridian. GMT was replaced by UTC as the global standard in 1972. Most time zone labels that say GMT are actually referring to UTC.

Which time zones are included?

The converter includes all major IANA time zones covering every inhabited region on Earth — over 50 cities representing all UTC offsets from UTC-12 to UTC+14. This includes all US time zones (Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific, Alaska, Hawaii), European zones, Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Africa and South America. The dropdown is organised by region for quick selection.

How do I find the best meeting time across multiple time zones?

Add all participants' time zones using the + button. Adjust the source time until all target zones show a time within typical working hours (9 AM–5 PM). A colour indicator highlights whether each zone's converted time falls in business hours, evening or overnight — making it easy to find an overlap window.

What is the International Date Line and how does it affect conversions?

The International Date Line (IDL) runs near the 180° meridian in the Pacific Ocean. When you cross it eastward, you go back one calendar day; westward, you go forward one day. Our converter correctly handles date rollovers — if converting from 10 PM New York time to Tokyo time, the result will show the correct next-day date in Tokyo.

Why does India have a 30-minute offset (UTC+5:30)?

India Standard Time is UTC+5:30 — a half-hour offset rather than a whole hour. Several countries use non-integer offsets for historical or geographic reasons. Nepal uses UTC+5:45, and Australia's central time zones use UTC+9:30 and UTC+10:30. Our converter handles all half and quarter-hour offsets correctly.

How do I convert a past or future date to another time zone?

Change the date in the source time picker to any past or future date. The converter applies the correct UTC offset for that date, automatically accounting for whether DST was in effect on that day in both the source and target zones. This is useful for historical research, future scheduling and contract interpretation.

What does UTC+0 mean?

UTC+0 means no offset from Coordinated Universal Time — it is the same as UTC itself. In winter, the UK, Ireland, Portugal and several West African countries observe UTC+0 (GMT). In summer, the UK shifts to UTC+1 (BST — British Summer Time) as DST. Entering UTC+0 as your source or target shows times in the Greenwich meridian reference frame.

Can I share a specific time conversion with someone?

The URL updates as you change zones and times, so you can copy and share the page URL to send a specific time conversion to a colleague. They will see the same source zone, target zones and time you set. This is useful for sending meeting invitations with a time zone reference link.
