APA (American Psychological Association) style is a citation format used primarily in social sciences, psychology, education, and nursing. It uses an author-date system for in-text citations (Smith, 2023) paired with a full reference list at the end of the document. APA 7th edition (2020) introduced changes including DOI formatting, up to 20 authors listed before truncation, and removal of publisher location for books.
Basic format: (Author Last Name, Year). For direct quotes, add the page number: (Smith, 2023, p. 45). For two authors: (Smith & Jones, 2023). For three or more authors: (Smith et al., 2023). For organisations: (American Psychological Association, 2020). For no author, use a shortened title in quotes: ("Article Title," 2023). Always match in-text citations to your reference list.
Key APA 7th edition changes: DOIs formatted as hyperlinks (https://doi.org/...) instead of "doi:". Publisher location removed from book citations. Up to 20 authors listed (then ellipsis and last author) vs. 6 authors in 6th edition. "Retrieved from" removed before URLs (except for sources that may change). Running head eliminated for student papers. These differences matter for academic submission — check your institution's requirements.
Use a DOI (Digital Object Identifier) when available — always preferred over URL. Journal articles usually have DOIs. Use a URL when no DOI exists for online sources. For webpages, include the URL even if no DOI. For newspaper articles accessed online, include URL. For print-only sources (books, print journals), no URL or DOI is needed. In APA 7th, format DOIs as: https://doi.org/xxxxxx
When no individual author is listed, use the organisation name as the author. If no organisation is credited either, move the title to the author position: Title of Article. (Year). Source. URL. In-text: use a shortened title in quotation marks: ("Title of Article," Year). For websites, the organisation responsible for the site often serves as the author even if not explicitly listed.
List them in chronological order in your reference list. For same author, same year, add a, b, c after the year: Smith (2023a) and Smith (2023b). In text: (Smith, 2023a). The letters correspond to alphabetical order of the work titles in the reference list.
