400KB is a solid choice for eCommerce product images. It is small enough to load reasonably quickly but large enough to maintain excellent quality at standard display sizes (600×600 pixels). For zoom-enabled product images, 400–600KB provides good detail when customers zoom in on product features.
A 1200×1200 pixel product photo at 400KB achieves approximately JPEG quality 78–85 — excellent for web display. A 1600×1200 pixel image at 400KB achieves quality 74–80. A 800×800 pixel image at 400KB achieves quality 88–94, appearing near-original quality.
