Create interactive spelling tests with grade-level word lists (Grade 1–10 built in) or your own custom word list. Students type answers and receive instant feedback. Includes pronunciation hints, score tracking, and printable answer sheet.
Select a built-in grade-level word list (Grades 1–10) for age-appropriate vocabulary, or switch to Custom mode and type your own word list (one word per line). Set the number of words per test (5, 10, 15, or 20).
Words are presented one at a time. A definition or usage example is shown as a hint. Type your spelling and press Enter or click Check. Instant feedback shows whether the answer is correct, with the correct spelling highlighted.
After completing all words, a score report shows percentage correct, which words were misspelled, and the correct spellings. Print the answer sheet for classroom use, or click Retry with the same list or New Test for different words.
Use Custom mode: enter your word list (one word per line) in the text area. Set the number of words per test. Optionally add a hint sentence for each word using the format: word|hint sentence (e.g. "beautiful|The sunset was beautiful."). Click Generate Test to create the interactive test. You can also print a blank answer sheet for paper-based classroom testing.
Grade 1: simple CVC words (cat, dog, run, sit). Grade 2: basic sight words and blends (bring, clock, dress). Grade 3: common 3-syllable words (animal, family, important). Grade 4: multisyllabic words (discover, because, different). Grade 5: advanced vocabulary and prefixes (necessary, disappear, knowledge). Grade 6–8: academic vocabulary including Latin and Greek roots. Grade 9–10: SAT/college prep vocabulary and complex spelling patterns.
Proven spelling study methods: Look-Cover-Write-Check (look at the word, cover it, write it, check). Mnemonics for difficult words (BECAUSE = Big Elephants Can Always Understand Small Elephants). Breaking words into syllables (ne-ces-sa-ry). Word family groups (receive, conceive, perceive share -ceive). Practice sentences using the word in context. Spaced repetition: review words 1 day later, 3 days later, then 1 week later. Handwriting practice for younger learners reinforces muscle memory.
Typical guidelines by grade: Grades 1–2: 5–10 words per week. Grades 3–5: 10–15 words per week. Grades 6–8: 15–20 words per week. Grades 9–12 and beyond: 20–25 words. For students with learning differences (dyslexia, etc.), fewer words with more repetition is more effective than a long list. Quality of mastery matters more than quantity.
Frequently misspelled words include: accommodate (double c, double m), definitely (not definately), separate (sep-a-rate), occurrence (double c, double r), privilege (not priviledge), necessary (one c, double s), embarrass (double r, double s), rhythm (no e), conscience (not concience), and perseverance. Many misspellings come from inconsistency between pronunciation and spelling, silent letters, double letters, and vowel sounds that can be spelled multiple ways (-tion vs -sion).
Yes — click Print Answer Sheet to generate a printable version of the test with numbered blank lines for students to write their answers, plus an optional answer key for the teacher. The print layout removes the interactive elements and formats the test clearly for A4 or letter-size paper. Useful for classroom use where paper tests are preferred over digital.
